Halifax Hotel Undergoes $15-Million Renovation During Pandemic

HALIFAX - It’s hard to picture the immense strain hotel operators have been under during the Covid-19 pandemic. With tourism and travel barely happening, occupancy rates are at an all-time low, and so is the cash-flow.Hotels have been forced into mass layoffs and some may not be open much longer. Now imagine the added financial stress of undertaking a $15-million dollar renovation during these tough times.The Atlantica Hotel in Halifax announced this massive renovation back in January when things were much more normal in the world. When Covid-19 hit in March, the hotel management decided to push through."He (hotel owner Sukhdev Toor) forged ahead and said now is the time and let’s not stop, and keep the construction guys employed," explained Atlantica’s general manager David Clark.Atlantica was built in 1974 and was due for a new look. The lobby will look completely different when renos are complete in a few months. Most noticeably, the bar, which used to be in the restaurant, will now be in the front lobby.All 240 rooms will have new flooring, new beds and new furniture. The bathrooms will also have a lot of work done. The huge renovation has been great for the local economy. Every day there are up to 50 trade workers on site.Perhaps the most dramatic change will be the outside design of the building. Cladding panels will create an hourglass shape and those panels will be backlit by LED lights."You’re going to be able to see this building right across the city," said Clark. "It’s going to be quite a sight when it’s done."Toor owns seven other hotels in Halifax and, as Clark explains, when Toor decides to renovate one of his properties, he goes all out.It looked nice, but you could tell it was a bit dated. And when Mr. Toor does a renovation, he doesn’t mess around with it. He tends to take it right back to the studs. He rebuilds and redesigns."Despite the excitement over the new-look hotel, Covid-19 has been hard for The Atlantica. The hotel was set to be the host hotel for the 2020 North American Indigenous Games. That event, of course, got cancelled.Prior to Covid-19 Atlantica employed 120 people; now it’s down to just 25."We’ve had some permanent layoffs because we don’t see business returning (to normal) anytime within the next six months," said Clark. "We’re not going to be back to normal levels for quite some time.""We went into survival mode and provided whatever service we could. So, it was very challenging, very difficult, for the first five or six weeks."With such a small staff, everyone had to chip in and take on more responsibilities. Clark says it was amazing to see everyone’s dedication to keeping the hotel afloat."It’s very dramatic and everybody’s doing work that would normally not be in their wheelhouse," said Clark. "I got sales managers cleaning rooms and vacuuming floors and myself mopping the lobby floor. We’re all doing everything to keep the doors open.""Every staff member who is still employed has been exemplary; nobody’s missed any time…we all want to be employed but we also want to see this place succeed."With medical experts predicting Covid-19 to be around for one-three more years, Clark knows business will not pick up anytime soon. September is usually a busy month for conventions and university-related travel, but this fall will be much slower.
