Dealing with irritation from brackets and wires is a typical experience for people wearing braces, especially during the first few weeks. The brackets and archwires can irritate your oral soft tissues, causing painful abrasions or even mouth blisters. The reassuring fact is that there are a variety of easy remedies to ease this discomfort and help your mouth adapt.

A widely used remedy is orthodontic wax. Softened between your fingers, gently place it over the irritating metal part causing friction. This forms a protective cushion that reduces abrasion. You can obtain it from your orthodontist’s office. It’s completely safe to swallow, so you can relax if it dislodges.

If a wire is sticking out, try using the eraser end of a pencil. Be avoid applying too much pressure. If that fails to help or if the wire is sharp and causing pain, apply a protective layer and call your orthodontist. They may need to trim or adjust the wire during your scheduled adjustment.

Rinsing your mouth with warm salt water after meals can also promote healing. 2 tsp kosher salt in 8 oz of lukewarm water and swish gently. This accelerates tissue repair and promotes healing of any small sores.

Avoid eating hard, crunchy, or sticky foods while you’re feeling sore. These can make irritation worse or even damage your braces. Choose gentle, easy-to-eat options like soft cheeses, oatmeal, scrambled eggs, and fruit purees until your mouth adjusts to the hardware.

Gradually, your mouth will toughen up and the irritation will lessen. Typically, patients notice that after several days to a week, they hardly notice their braces anymore. In the meantime, be patient and take care of your mouth with gentle care.

If discomfort persists, hasn’t eased within 3–5 days, or if you see pus, 東京 部分矯正 heat, or fever, contact your orthodontist right away.
